For better or worse, it is a multitasking world we live in. And multiple monitors are uniquely useful for keeping track of numerous programs running simultaneously on your computer. Plenty of studies have pegged the productivity gained by adopting multiple monitors at anywhere from 9 to 50 percent. Multiple monitors reduce memory load by keeping more of your work in front of you, so you don’t have to expend as much energy remembering where things are. Multiple screens can also make us faster, saving us from the task of constantly searching through files and folders for information.

Multiple Monitors

Setting up multiple monitors isn’t particularly difficult, but depending on the type of computer you have and how many screens you want, the complexity can ramp up quickly and require all sorts of cards, adapters and dongles. It’s best to buy monitors that match the video outputs of your computer, but if your computer and monitor require different plugs, you’ll have to choose from a constellation of adapters that provide a bridge between standards. Additionally, there are miniaturized versions of many of these connectors — Apple is particularly fond of integrating mini video ports into its laptops—which can require adapters just to mate them to their larger siblings

So how many monitors can you plug into your computer? That largely depends on your graphics card. Most graphics cards can support two monitors—for desktops, that typically means two independent screens can plug into the back of the PC. For laptops, the card can drive both the integrated display and one outside monitor. Some desktop computers allow you to add a second graphics card, which means you can connect four monitors. And there are gaming-enthusiast computers that support up to three graphics cards for a total of six monitor outputs—but at a couple hundred dollars per card and per screen, that can quickly get expensive. Some higher-end graphics cards from AMD’s ATI division use a technology the company calls Eyefinity, which allows a single graphics card to support up to six monitors. Likewise, specialty manufacturer Matrox has cards that can support up to eight monitors. Read the rest of this entry

Mobile working is efficient…

mobile working

If you or proportions of your staff have meetings across the UK each week, it is definitely worth looking at the mobile working scenario for your key directors and managers. With the ease of set-up and lowering costs it is simply a waste of time making all your employees come in and out of the office every day.

The average commute time in London was 45 minutes each way per day in 2003 (now closer to an hour). Wouldn’t you prefer that time being spent on extra effort and company growth, all executed by invigorated employees?

Additionally, regular commuting has proven to be an extra drain and stress creator for personnel, it certainly doesn’t reenergise them. And with rising fuel & travel costs the motivation for normal 9 to 5 working day commutes is likely to get even worse.

The days of static office and workers are behind us. Nowadays employees need to be able to work from anywhere, including their homes, the coffee shop and even their cars. Virtual server technology gives workers the tools they need to keep in touch with the office, or even to take the office with them wherever they go.

With the old server model application, employees had to be present in the office and physically connected to the office network to do their job and to access system resources. Sometimes, companies were able to provide a kind of rudimentary remote access, but that access often involved detailed instructions, long waiting times, cumbersome connection procedures and slow connection speeds.

server virtualization

These days those barriers can have a profound impact on your business, so why not eliminate them through the virtual server technology? With a virtual server deployment and implemented and well thought out, your employees can access corporate servers and system resources, wherever they are. While there is an internet connection, there is a link to your virtual servers.

Many of our customers who have just started using the latest mobile broadband system confirm that the increased speed makes a big difference in how they work.

A flood of new devices, including smartphones and tablets, has brought new challenges for technology managers of the company.

mobile workingA 2010 study conducted by Cisco Systems, found that 45% of professionals have been unprepared or found difficult to implement systems for mobile workforce.

However, the need to get it right, both from a personal point of view and productivity is apparent.

The same study found Cisco two-thirds of employees desire to work flexibility, with over half of respondents saying they would take a lower paid job that offers more flexibility at work.

However, the responses to the demand for mobile work force are mixed, according to Professor Kevin Rockmann, George Mason University.

“I think that organizations are struggling to know which technologies to support,” he said.

“A lot of people I know have cell phones or several laptops. They have an iPad that is theirs and one that belongs to work.”

“How the organization should decide what it will take over?” he added.

Trying to define the broad policies is less effective than ad-hoc solutions, according to Prof Rockmann. Read the rest of this entry
